Natsukashi, ne? |
Yes, very nostalgic. Inuyasha. The first anime I watched with gusto. I have Andy to thank for that. I tip my hat to you, Andy, for adding the catalyst that has started a chain reaction of excellence. It's been about four and a half years now since I saw the first episode of Inuyasha, and since then anime has consumed a goodly portion of my life and time.
Can I just say, hell yeah? I can't quite explain it, but perhaps you can relate. When you come across something that fits so perfectly with your thoughts and ideas that you just know it will impact your life forever, you'll know about how I feel.
At any rate, the reason this is on my mind at this particular moment is because I have delved into the vast Sea of Intarwebs™ and uncovered something magnificent. The complete Inuyasha manga series to date.
A short history: About two years ago, I lived in Iowa. I watched anime as much as I ever do. (a lot.) I was still watching Inuyasha at the time, and it had grown past 150 episodes by this time. Finding out that it was to end at episode 167, I was rather shocked and excited. I was hoping to see an amazing ending, resolving the ever present plot that had driven the show since the first episode. As I reached nearer to that final episode, I began to notice something was amiss. It wasn't moving to resolution. On the contrary, some of the last episodes were nothing but filler side-plots, as I had come to expect to see between the larger main plot segments. Upon seeing the first part of the double-episode final, I was apprehensive but hopeful. It seemed that it was possible to finish the series in the next 25 minutes... even if it was done quickly.
Alas, it was not to be. Upon watching the final episode veer completely away from resolution, and indeed back to the plot point at which every main plot segment inevitably returned, I fell to my knees with astonishment and bewilderment. I was told by the last episode that "the manga in Shounen Sunday still continued."
What the fuck did I care about the damn Shounen Sunday!? I was an anime man to the end. Manga had never been any part of my life. Don't get me wrong, I love reading. A good book can put my mind into another existence. Manga, however, seemed to me like a poor man's anime. Just a comic with no color. I love color! So, that was it for Inuyasha. I dismissed it as though there simply was no other way for me to find out what else was happening to Inuyasha and his stalwart crew. It was as good as gone and unresolved.
Until now. At the persistence of Mr. Nick Stella, I have succumbed to procuring the Inuyasha manga. I would like to reiterate my appreciation of the magical internets, as I was able to find and download all of the Inuyasha manga in one fell swoop.
Now, two full volumes into the manga past the point at which the anime left off, I'm once again hooked. I have quite a few to get through to catch up, and they continue to come out. Who knows, maybe I'll embrace manga as I have embraced anime. What better place to start than where I started in the first place. Inuyasha.
And so, as this seems to me both a new beginning and a look back at old beginnings, I thought it a fitting place to document my appreciation to anime. To those who've brought me anime, and those to whom I have brought it. To the places anime has inspired me to see, and to the ideas that it spawns in my mind. Its impact on me in these four shorts years is astounding, and everlasting. It seems hard to remember a time without it, and that makes me grin.
Arigato, anime. Arigato.

OMG. Hans is alive! (Just look at the last date he posted). I guess that proves one thing at least. That he isnt lying about his obsession about anime, and that it consumes every waking moment of his life. Lucky bastard =). Needless to say, anime doesnt exist where I am, and probably never will. Although I did watch Dragonball Z once on TV, but its just not the same dubbed in Spanish.

Thanks Hans, that means a lot.
I remember the divine influence that inspired me to burn Inuyasha to a series of blank cds for you. I am proud that you found an interest in anime. In life, it's important to find those things that really interest us. Those interests are life changing, and it is my belief that they get us closer to our truer selves.
If it wasn't for that fateful day I don't think we would have gone to Japan. I hold our trip to Japan very dear to my heart.. it was a perfect adventure. We experienced the food and the atmosphere of Japan, and on top of that we hung out WITH A FREAKING JAPANESE ROCK BAND.. which was awesome.
Keep us posted on how the manga turns out. I'm interested in hearing a brilliant end to the Inuyasha series, I hope to God that they finish it properly.
P.S. Hey Mom, I think you got to use the html to make hyper links in comments, so: Inuyasha Wiki. Though I don't think Hans will need to read the Wiki on this series... after all he's seen all of the episodes, heh. Though, It is the thought that counts. :)

I recently tried to read Q-ko Chan, a manga by the creators of FLCL(my initiation into anime addiction.) I couldn't read it. The whole "read this crap from right to left" kept throwing me off and the colorless battle scenes blurred together in such a way that I could not understand WTF was going on. I kept thinking maybe it was just me, but I kept running into the same questons. For the love of god what is that?! A missile? A robot? A fist? A duck flying south for the winter? I still don't know. As much as I wanted to read it, I simply didn't get it. I may try manga again with something else, but for now I'm sticking to anime.
